The raven flag was flown by various Viking chieftains and other Scandinavian rulers during the 9th, 10th, and 11th centuries. The raven is a common iconic figure and it's linked to Odin, the highest Scandinavian god. It's said the first flag to fly in North America by the Europeans settlers the Vikings (though not permanently) was know as the common Norse flag, known as Terror of the Land, or simply a raven, the traditional war emblem of the Viking flag. Legend has it that whoever bears this flag in battle will win, but the bearer will die.
